Eastern Redbud - A Knock-out Native!

Spring isn't offically here until we see the familiar lavender blooms on the trees near the edge of the woods....our native Redbuds.  Price Nurseries Official Tree of the Month for April, the Eastern Redbud, is well-known but underappreciated. It blooms for a couple of weeks in April but its form and unique heart-shaped leaves add beauty to our landscapes throughout the year.  It is grown in both single-stem and multiple-stem forms, eventually achieving a 25' height and 25' spread.  It is a fairly adaptable tree, happy in a wide variety of soils as long as the site is well-drained.

Redbuds have been grown in nurseries for many years and a number of interesting cultivars are available.  There are weeping forms, red and golden-leaved forms, and even Redbuds that bloom white, called Whitebuds! Ha! Redbuds are useful in a shaded understory situation or out in full sun so there is a spot in every yard for one of Indiana's prettiest native trees.  If Mother Nature didn't plant one in yours, you need to do it for her and this spring is the perfect time!
