The Serbian Spruce

Our Official Tree of the Month for November is the lovely Serbian Spruce.  When it comes to the Spruce genus, everyone knows of the famous Colorado Blue and the Norway (sometimes called Norwegian, usually the tree of choice for the New York City Christmas tree) but few have heard of the Serbian.  It has qualities that really should be more well known.  Its foliage is dark green with white stripes underneath, giving it a bluish cast. The form is narrow and upright, working well in smaller properties such as would be found in a residential subdivision.  The tree has slightly pendulous branches that give it a very graceful appearance.  Culture-wise, it is tolerant of high temps and humidity, which make it more resistant to disease and insect problems than its Blue cousin.  It is not particular about soil pH and actually does well in soils with lime content as compared to other evergreens that prefer more acidic soil conditions.  A well-drained, rich soil is best but the Serbian has proven to be very adaptable.  Mature size in this part of the country is about 15' wide x 40' tall and is slower growing than the Norway.  It is just a GORGEOUS tree and now that you know about it, you should consider it as an alternative to the all-too-common Colorado Blue and Norway Spruces.  You will be glad you did!
